The soaring columns behind the altar number twelve in honor of the apostles and create one of the distinctive optical illusions of the church. As one moves about the church building, the walls appear to move, signifying a dynamic people of God, ever embracing new and differing needs and ever faithful to our God. The side walls are of textured acoustical plaster, and hold no weight. They merely enclose space, and help to stabilize the structure. The square crosses on the side walls are dedication crosses. Candles are placed there on festive occasions and on the anniversary of the dedication of the church. If you pay particular attention to the unfinished concrete, you will observe the grain of the form lumber and even the nail heads. The small circular holes in the concrete result from the form bracings, and are left there for design. Natural lighting bathes the space by means of skylights, while artificial lighting originates from the light trough running the length of the ceiling, where light has been focused on particular areas in the church. A new, state-of-the-art sound system was installed in 1999.
