The walls and ceiling. The north and south walls are 90 feet to the top of the roof.  The ceiling is 85 feet high directly over the sanctuary. The roof is held in place for the most part by the pressure of the east and west walls forcing against it. The west end of the ceiling appears to be higher than the east end, but this is an optical illusion. The roof drains through pipes inbedded in the columns at the west end and lead to drywells in the ground outside. Materials: 7,000 cubic yards of concrete weighing 14,000 tons used in making 210 separate pours for the superstructure of the building. 575 tons of reinforcing steel are embedded in the concrete. 1/2 million board feet of lumber was used in construction forms and supports. This was completely dismantled upon completion of the building. 40,000 red bricks were used in the floor of baptistry, church and church office area.
